Gas & Electric is disputing comments about Kern electric costs made by a company spokesman in a county Board of Supervisors meeting last week.
In an opinion page letter printed in Monday’s Californian and a full-page ad today, Pacific Gas & Electric Senior Vice President Tom Bottorff tells local customers the utility company is striving to address local price concerns.
And he tried to defuse some of the damage done March 2 when PG&E spokesman Ken Cooper acknowledged that the current electrical rate structure is unfair to customers in Kern, Tulare and Kings counties because the area’s hot climate often pushes them into the upper three tiers of the rate structure.

In last week’s meeting, Cooper said Kern County customers are subsidizing consumers in other parts of the state. Bottorff directly disputes Cooper’s comments in his op-ed piece and in the advertisement.
In today’s supervisors meeting, Kern Tax Director Michael Turnipseed and PG&E might reprise last week’s blockbuster debate.
Turnipseed, who also said Kern County is subsidizing the Bay Area and other cooler parts of the state, said he will speak today and present a three-year plan to lower power costs here.
But he said PG&E has reached out to him to see if he would support their efforts.
Company officials wanted to know if they would have Turnipseed’s support “if they could get to a top rate of $.30 a kilowatt hour by 2011,” Turnipseed said. “I said, ‘That’s a good first step.’”
Today’s meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the Kern County Board of Supervisors’ chambers, 1115 Truxtun Ave.
